Method Acting
Method acting: is a training and rehearsal technique which are designed to bring out expressive and emotional performances, Method acting was created by various theatre practitioners primarily in USA This form of acting is considered to be one of the controversial and elite approaches acting, This method of acting came from the Stanislavski's system, which was developed by Russian actor and director Konstantin Stanislavski which he explained in his book 'Creating a role' three other actors who contributed highly to the development of method acting by highliting certain aspects into what elements needed to be explored through method acting was; Stella Adler (for sociological aspects), Lee Strasberg (for psychological aspects) and Sanford Meisner (for behavioral aspects) they developed this theory when they had all worked together in group theatre in New York City. I have chosen to look into some of the best and most prolific method acting performances to date.
Robert De Niro - Raging Bull
Robert De Niro in this film played Championship to washed up boxer Jake Lamotta. De niro for his scenes as older Jake lemotta went on a strict eating diet where he had to consume enough each day to gain 60lbs pounds to play the older boxer. For the scenes he had to play the boxer in his younger years De Niro got into the best shape of his life being trained to fight as a real boxer, he even took part in some undercard boxing fights to gain the level of experience he needed to perform as a hardened boxing champion. Robert De Niro that year won the best actor in a lead role for that performance that year. I analysed two clips from the film which demonstrate the physicality of the performances De Niro gave as Young Jake and Older Jake, I think through doing the various weight loss techniques he used to portray both versions of Jake allowed him to create two sides of a broken mirror. When De Niro is playing Younger jake by looking at him and his performance I can see that this is a mad who is determined to succeed and he is currently at the top of his game psychically and mentally, the way De Niro Glides around the camera shows that he was in very peak physical health at the time, but when he portrays older Jake we see De Niro looking very broken and sluggish as this character from his physical performance alone we can tell this a broken man. This adds very well to the performance of the actor because it is more believable, by seeing robert De Niro fight on screen as Jake Lamotta I buy that he could be a boxer, his movement and physique make his performance all the more better because it allows the audience to be more invested in this story and character.
