God is a gangsta

Image
God is a gangsta is a short film/Music video created by Jack Bergert and Kendrick lamar. The film depicts two key songs out of Kendrick Lamar's Grammy winning album, 'To Pimp A Butterfly' these songs are 'U' and 'For Free? (Interlude)' To understand this video I have to look back into an underlying theme in 'To Pimp A Butterfly' Kendrick on this album has a poem which Is read throughout the entirety of the album, The poem talks about Kendrick's struggle with rising to fame and being able to maintain his connection to his home of Compton. This poem appears in small verses after every song on the album, this short film relates to that particular poem and narrative that the album creates because the video recreates narrative moments in the album. The first half of the video is dedicated to the song 'U' which shows Kendrick verbally addressing himself and his self hatred, this relates to the narrative because in the poem it reads "Resent...

Writing exercises

Image
I took these mind mapping exercises because I'm trying to find ways which I can create comedic moments with things which are related to hip-hop culture and to also figure out how I'm going to create my characters and what songs they will be performing. I made a mind map for mumble rap trying to detect the key features of what mumble rap is and the quirks and traits it peruses, by doing this it's allowed me to understand all different aspects of the genre I can explore in order to make interesting comedic moments, certain scenes and situations I can place my characters into and also to help with some narrative aspects also. The other mind map was strictly to be able to come up with names for the main and the side characters of the film, this genre of hip-hop has a very generic formula of making names, so I took the key first names of rappers which are Young (bans, leans, jeezy), Rich (Brian, The kid) and Lil (Peep, Uzi, Pump) and added funnier second names to them to creat...

People just do nothing

Image
People just do nothing is a British comedy Documentary series which tells the story of 'Kurupt FM' a pirate radio station ran by a group of useless Mc's and Dj's and their quest to become Megastars. This series concentrates mostly on four members of the the station; MC Grinda who is the so called 'Leader' of the group, who is a very obnoxious, hot headed guy who claims to be "the best MC in the galaxy", DJ Beats who is an idiotic simpleton who is Grinda's right hand man, Chabbudy G who is the manager of the group and a wannabe entrepreneur having one business failure to the next, and DJ Steves a Moronic waster who owns the location of the radio station. People just do nothing is a great take on the music industry and the struggle of achieving fame and fortune in the music industry. This type of story has been told before in many occasions but what this series more original is the way that it's dialogue and characters are written, the characters...

Intro: In 1941 the first form of music videos emerged when juke boxes called the 'panoram soundie' plays short clips to music. 21 years later shows such as 'top of the pops' and Ready! Steady! Go! emerge bringing music to the small screen. In 1964 The Beatles create one of the first ever Music films called 'a hard days night' then moving on four years later music directors start to become a thing when the rolling stones collaborate with french director luc Godard to make the video for 'sympathy of the devil', In 1970 the record industry discovers they can now promote bands with short promo videos which can instead replace live performances. Since then music industry has drastically changed with music videos being a groundbreaking form of visual entertainment. The purpose of this essay is to present and justify the purpose of the music video and what benefits it brings to the artists and the industry. Promotion of artists: When music videos are made...

Crop Circle

Image
Crop circle is a short film Written, Directed and starring Ice City grime rapper Nines. The film was made as a companion piece to nine's new 'Crop Circle' which tells the story of young man who has recently come from university to try and make a living for himself, after meeting with his friend 'Nines' he gets lured into a situation where he has to look after a large amount of contraband for Nines after his mother finds the contraband and disposes of it, our main character must go a dangerous task to repay his friend in order to restore balance in his life. I researched into this short film because I wanted to observe a film which had been created by and starring a urban music artist. Nines had written, starred, directed and provided the soundtrack to the the film. Something I liked about the film was how well directed it was and the variation of shots that were used, before I watched the film I didn't think it would be as capably created as technically as I tho...

a history of Gang Culture in the African American community

Image
History: African American gangs had began forming in the inner cities of California. Gangs were not territorial at the time they were more or less loose associations, unorganised and rarely violent. these early gangs mainly consisted of people in families and neighbourhood friends  who involved themselves rarely in violet or major crimes , these gangs were specifically made to portray an intimidating persona to provide an easy means of obtaining money. From 1955 to 1963, African American gangs  increased with greater amounts of members and operated mainly in south central Los Angeles and Compton. This was partly due to more African American youths banding together to protect themselves from rival gangs. not until the late 1960s the Crips and Bloods the two most prevalent African American gangs, were formed. The Crips began forming in southeast Los Angeles, they terrorised local neighbourhoods and schools by assaults and armed robberies. They were t...

Element

Image
Element by Kendrick Lamar  Element is a short film/ Music video created by visionary hip-hop artist Kendrick Lamar. The video is about the; pain, beauty, peace and violence that exists within his community or as he describes it 'His Element' and his hardship to fight whatever obstacles come in front of him to stop him from succeeding. For this video Kendrick Lamar takes inspiration from photographer Gordon parks who was a very influential american photographer who had battled through the civil rights movement with his photography and he had also directed the film 'Shaft' which made him an pioneer of the black exploitation era. Many images which appear in the music video completely recreate park's photos as a way to subliminally talk to the audience about elements of his community. I feel as though in the music video Kendrick himself works as the director of his own image that he willing to create for the video, he selects what influences and artists he wants to...

Dope

Image
Dope  Dope is a film about is a teenager called Malcolm a straight A student who also happens to be a 90s hip hop geek who plays in a punk band with his friends 'Jib' and 'Diggy' Malcolm lives in one of the most dangerous neighbourhoods of America 'Inglewood' he feels his life has put him in the direction to either end up as gang banger or to achieve his dreams of joining Harvard university. After Malcolm is invited to underground party with the local gangsters lead by 'Dom' (Played by Asap Rocky) after a life changing event occurs at this party Malcolm and his friends are lead into adventure around L.A. Dope on the surface seems to be quite a generic story, a film trying to tell the struggle of one young person trying to achieve greatness from the bad cards  they have been dealt in life. To me Dope is a unique story in the way that it approaches various pressing issues to do with Race, Class, Education and Dreams. The Character of Malcolm is a very co...
